Visit Utah Beach - American Sector D-Day Landings

Despite being a late addition to the D-Day plans, Utah Beach turned out to be a great success, led primarily by U.S. 4th Infantry Division soldiers. The main goal was to capture the port city of Cherbourg to make sure a flow of troops, fuel and supplies could reach France.

However, soldiers were dropped off target, meaning they were about 2,000 yards south of the original target. This placed troops in a less-defended sector, which allowed Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (son of President Theodore Roosevelt) and his men to quickly invade German defenses and advance – with less than 300 casualties, the lowest of all five landing beaches.

What to see Utah Beach

The Musée du Débarquement – The Utah Beach Landing Museum is full of artifacts, vehicles, equipment and eye-witness accounts of this period of Second World War history. It’s built above the remains of a concrete German bunker and contains a fully restored B-26 bomber, one of only 6 which exists today.

La voie de la Liberté – The Route to Freedom is a historic trail of the route take, by the liberators from Normandy to Belgium. There’s a marker at each kilometre on the route, showing the journey from Sainte-Mère-Eglise to Bastogne.

Sainte-Mère-Eglise – The first American parachutists landed on Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Eglise on D-Day, making them the first to land on French soil. ¾ of them did ,ot land on target, including Private John Steele who was suspended from the church spire for 2 hours before being rescued, something portrayed in 1962 film The Longest Day (you can find a commemorative mannequin which hangs near the spire today!).

The Church holds stained glass windows which pay homage to the bravery of the soldiers. By early morning on June 6th, the town was under US Army control. This was the first town in France to be liberated by the Americans and from the air.

Airborne Museum – In the village you can also find the Airborne Museum, which is dedicated to the aerial landings that heavily contributed to the success of D-Day. Find planes, exhibitions and fully immerse yourself into the history these soldiers faced.

Angoville-au-Plain – Find the Romanesque church in this town where two American medics treated both American and German soldiers for 72 hours, saving 80 lives. There are stained-glass windows that honour and thank the medics and paratroopers.
