A family story

Hôtel Caumont

The Hôtel de Caumont, formerly known as the Hôtel de Réauville, is a grand townhouse located in the Mazarin district of Aix-en-Provence. Built between 1715 and 1742 by the architect Robert de Cotte and executed by Georges Vallon, it was originally commissioned by François de Rolland, Lord of Réauville. 🏛️

The building then passed into the hands of several major Provençal families, including the Bruny family, before becoming associated with the Caumont family through the marriage of Pauline de Bruny to the Marquis de Caumont in 1795.

Over time, the mansion had several uses and notably became the Darius Milhaud Conservatory, reflecting its important role in the cultural life of Aix. 🎶

Listed as a historic monument, it still preserves today the richness of its aristocratic history and remarkable architecture, making it one of the jewels of Aix’s heritage ✨.

Its french-style gardens

Hôtel Caumont

The gardens of the Hôtel  Caumont are a true green oasis in the heart of Aix-en-Provence 🌿. Designed in the 18th century in the French formal style, they are distinguished by their highly structured layout: symmetrical pathways, geometric flowerbeds, and elegant perspectives. Inspired by the great aristocratic estates, this type of garden creates a sense of order and harmony while remaining intimate in scale.

The garden is arranged on two levels, each offering a different atmosphere 🌸. The upper section is more open, featuring a large lawn, carefully trimmed boxwood, and a central basin that brings freshness and light. As you move downward, the lower garden becomes more intimate, with meticulously shaped hedges and refined plant patterns leading to a decorative fountain that enhances the classical and soothing character of the space.

Finally, what makes these gardens particularly charming is the blend of French formality and Mediterranean vegetation ☀️. Cypress trees, linden trees, laurels, and magnolias can all be found here, changing with the seasons. Together, they create a calm and elegant atmosphere, perfect for strolling, relaxing, or simply enjoying a timeless moment in the middle of the city.
