Two months after the D-DAY in Normandy, the US 7th Army, headed by the General Alexander Patch, landed in Provence to open a second front against the Nazis. The goal was to fast the German defeat for the West to be in a situation of strenght at the winner’s table against the Soviets.
On August 15th 1944, more than 300,000 Allies (North Americans, British and French resistants) landed on the Provence beaches. The aim was the liberation of two strategic ports : Toulon, the seat of the French navy, and Marseilles.
